Our Purpose

Our official mandate and Statement of Purpose is to collect, preserve, study, exhibit and interpret in an interesting way those objects; including books, papers, manuscripts, drawings, maps, pictures, paintings, etc. that will best serve to illustrate the founding, settlement and development of the Strait of Canso Communities.

The Port Hastings Museum will collect artifacts and documents that depict the area in terms of natural resources, industries, trade and transportation, which brought profound changes to the Strait Area. The Port Hastings Museum and Archives will cooperate with other similar museums as well as with the Nova Scotia Museum in collecting materials of significance so that they may be preserved and aid in the advancement of knowledge of the Strait area and province of Nova Scotia.

We cover down route 19 through Troy, Creignish, Craigmore to the bridge in Long Point, out Creignish Rear and South Rhodena, back in to Queensville and Lexington, across to Mackdale, Askilton, Sugar Camp, Barberton, Crandall Road, MacIntyre's Lake, Sunnyside and Bear Head, Point Tupper, Mulgrave and back across to Port Hawkesbury and Port Hastings. These areas have been covered since the beginning of our story because of the train and car ferries initially in history and then after the completion of the Causeway, the industries that established down in the Point Tupper, Sunnyside areas and the critical impact which it all made on the town of Mulgrave.
