The deep water of the Strait of Canso at the village of Port Hastings was the reason the Inverness and Richmond Coal Pier was constructed here in 1902. Historians may find many interesting facts in our records.
Visitors interested in the history of the railway after its arrival in the 1890’s in the Strait Area will enjoy seeing the binders and photographs covering this theme.
The Central House was one of many businesses on the Main Street in the village of Port Hastings providing services after the arrival of the Inverness and Richmond railway in 1902. The men had lunch here at noon before taking the train back to Point Tupper to meet the ferry later in the afternoon.
The waterfront in the town of Port Hawkesbury and its historic role in the Strait Area is well documented in the displays and files at the Museum.
Taken around 1920's with car ferries docking on the immediate right, looking up from there at the Baptist and Zion Methodist Churches on the respective right and left on the upper side of Granville St. On the extreme right facing Granville St. is the town hall and public school up above it.
Many photographs are on display that depict the many travelling conditions between Cape Breton Island and mainland Nova Scotia on the train and auto ferries. Ice conditions in the Strait of Canso were a part of the transportation problem before the completion of the Canso Causeway in 1955.
A significant display is the construction of the Canso Causeway and Canal which began in 1952 and had the official opening celebrations on August 13, 1955. Anniversary celebrations over the years are compiled in albums and scrapbooks on display.
On display are models of boats that once provided the coastal transportation to the Strait Area communities. These models are hand crafted by Mark Boudreau.
